125 years of h&T

Today we are proud to be the industry leader in modern pawnbroking, a lending principle that dates back 100’s of years allowing people to borrow money based on the value of their assets.

We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings in 1897, when Mr Harvey and Mr Thompson first registered the ltd. business and opened its inaugural store in London to a UK wide, FCA regulated business. Today we’re present in over 270 high street locations throughout England, Scotland and Wales, trusted by over 100,000 customers every year.

It all started with Pawnbroking, and to this day we continue to offer this core service in all our stores - along with a host of others like travel money, gold purchase and cheque cashing. Our pre-owned retail operation has now expanded into all stores offering excellent value on new and pre-owned jewellery as well as Swiss watches.

We’re incredibly proud of the H&T we see today. It wouldn't be possible without the continued hard work and dedication of our 1,400 colleagues constantly striving to ensure our service and customer experiences meet your expectations. We’ll continue to evolve our business to best fit the needs of a modern, changing lifestyle.

    H&T Pawnbrokers Ltd was officially registered by Charles James Thompson and Walter Harvey. 12 H&T stores were opened, mostly in South East London, including; Lambeth Walk, Old Kent Rd, Albert Embankment and Vauxhall over the next few years.

  • 1941

    1941

    Sadly, H&T sustained substantial bombing damage to many of its London stores, one of which was completely destroyed. 78 male H&T employees had been called up for service, many of whom retired to the business after the war.

    2022

    H&T expands its presence in Wales with 3 new stores. The total number of stores across the UK passed 256 in May with over 1,400 employees in total across stores and support centres.
